Dump truck hits Stover Road bridge, rips bed off

Update 12:54 p.m.: The Kansas Highway Patrol released a crash log for the incident. According to the crash log, a 48-year-old man from Topeka was driving west on U.S. 24 and didn’t realize the bed of the truck was raised. The truck struck the overhead bridge.

The driver was taken to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to the log.

Update 12:15 a.m.: A Kansas Department of Transportation spokeswoman said the northbound Stover Bridge road that crosses U.S. 24 is closed following the crash. KDOT told 27 News that the outside lane of westbound U.S. 24 is also temporarily closed.

“Until the inspection is complete, no information is available regarding repair times, potential costs, etc.,” KDOT said.

KDOT confirmed the southbound Stover Road bridge and the eastbound lanes of U.S. 24 are still open to traffic.

TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – First responders and law enforcement are at the scene of a dump truck vs. bridge crash north of Topeka.

The crash happened around 7:50 a.m. at the crossover for U.S. 24 Highway and Stover Road. According to a 27 News reporter, an ambulance, firetruck and multiple Highway Patrol and Shawnee County deputies were on scene.

Crews on scene could not confirm if there were any injuries.

Traffic was reduced to one lane near the crash. Kandrive.gov is reporting traffic disruptions in the area.

KDOT told 27 News that the responsible party’s insurance company would be responsible for the repair costs.
