RILEY COUNTY ( KSNT ) – Firefighters in Riley County doused a garage fire Friday that caused nearly one million of dollars in damage.

Vivienne Leyva with the Riley County government said in a press release that fire crews were called around 10:15 a.m. on Sept. 6 to a home in the 5500 block of High Meadow Circle near Tuttle Creek Lake. Riley County Fire District #1 responded to the call for help, finding a garage next to a single-family home emitting black smoke.

Fire crews were able to put the flames out within 20 minutes with no injuries reported. The family living in the home had a smoke detector to thank for alerting them to the danger.

“A working smoke detector alerted the resident of the fire in its early stages of development which allowed for timely notification to the fire department and the quick response and knock down of the fire,” Fire Chief Russel Stukey said.

Fire investigators say no foul play is suspected with this situation. The total damages caused by the fire to the home, a vehicle and other contents of the garage are in the $90,000 range.

“I’m incredibly proud of the skill and dedication shown by our volunteer firefighters,”Deputy Fire Chief Doug Russell said. “They responded quickly and worked efficiently to locate and extinguish the fire within just a few minutes of their arrival on scene. Thanks to their hard work, as well as the working smoke detectors, the damage to the home was minimal, and the fire was contained to the garage.”
