REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The Autocross Club of Central Oregon took to the Redmond High School parking lot pavement Sunday, to see who was the fastest driver this day.

More than 40 people signed up for the club's event, in which people flew by in Audis, Fords and Subarus to get the fastest time.

The nonprofit's president, David Boyd, said autocross provides an opportunity for drivers to gain and test their driving skills.

"It helps out with the drivers being able to learn how the car handles and what what to do when the car misbehaves, like in snow and ice, and when they slide," Boyd said.

This form of motorsport uses traffic cones to make a mini-road course in a large parking lot, where you can see who can drive the quickest without hitting any cones or going off-course.

Students from around Central Oregon participate in autocross, including Taylor Arata, who will be a senior at Summit High School.

"It's so fun! It's definitely an adrenaline rush," she said. "You definitely get shaky after, but not in a scary way. It's super-duper fun! All of the people make it super-enjoyable, as well. I've gotten to drive other people's cars, like pretty rare ones."

Arata is not new to the car scene. Her dad has been fixing cars since she was little.

The Huet twins, Conor and Tristan, have a passion for engineering, prompting them to join the club.

Connor said, "We bought a project car and we started working on it and started learning everything about cars and how to work on them. It's been really fun."

Tristan said, ", And especially coming from an engineering background, getting to test our skills. You get to do a lot of welding and working on the cars, so that was all very useful to see."

While drivers usually drive in low speeds -- not going above 65 mph, the club notes it’s one of the fastest-paced, rapid-fire forms of motorsports.

Boyd said, "Pretty much any car that you drive on the street, we can drive out here. There are a few limitations, with big trucks or something like that. But other than that, anybody, and it can be just your daily driver, doesn't have to be prepared for racing. But we go all the way up to full race cars."

Autocross Club of Central Oregon's next event will take place Sept. 6-8 at Mt. Bachelor.
