Wahine Classic all-girls surf competition set for Aug. 3-4
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. (WECT) - The Wahine Classic all-girls surf competition will take place Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 3-4, according to an announcement from organizers. “The Wahine Classic Surfing Competition in Wrightsville Beach began in the summer of 2013,” the event website states. “The event is one of the only all-female surfing competitions on the East Coast and it continues to grow each year, attracting both amateur and pro surfers. Jo Pickett, a legendary surfing instructor with over 20 years of experience and the owner of Crystal South Surf Camp, is the event’s organizer.”
Man pleads guilty to charges in 2023 fatal hit-and-run
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - A man pled guilty to charges in connection to a fatal hit-and-run in Southport in 2023. Anthony Overman Jr. pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter and felony hit and run causing death. He received a sentence of 10-21 months in prison and three years of supervised probation to begin at the end of his sentence respectively.
South Brunswick playing in Majors World Series
The South Brunswick Major baseball team (ages 11-12) finished second in the Diamond Youth Baseball Division II state tournament at Lockwood Folly District Park and qualified for the World Series in Bossier City, Louisiana. Bracket play in the Majors World Series begins with five games Friday, July 26. The World Series is set to end by Tuesday, July 30. Ten teams are in the series.
New Bern Alderman nominated to fill unexpired NC Senate term
On July 23rd, 2024, New Bern Alderman Bob Brinson was nominated by the Republican 2nd Senatorial District Committee to serve the remainder of North Carolina Senator Jim Perry’s unexpired term. Senator Perry resigned his position on July 1st, 2024. This nomination now goes to Governor Roy Cooper for appointment. Per NC Statute 163-11, the governor shall appoint the nominee or after seven days, the nominee is presumed to be appointed.
