Hope Services opens new respite house for unsheltered in Hilo
HILO, Hawaii (Island News) -- Hope Services Hawaii has a number of new projects underway on the Big Island, addressing the needs of the unhoused. The Wilder House opened July 1st. For Hope Services, it is the second such integrated care hub facility on island. The medical respite home is equipped with a nurses' station and located in a serene neighborhood off of Saddle Road, from which residents come and go.
Hawaiʻi Island Lane Closures: Week of July 22
HILO (NIGHT WORK) Alternating single lane closure on Kanoelehua Avenue (Route 11) in the southbound direction, between mile post 5.19 to 5.39, in the vicinity of Ikaika Street, beginning Monday, July 22, through Friday, July 26 from 7 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. for crews to upgrade the Traffic Data Collection Device.

State Gave up Funding for Marine Mammal Protection Due to Cumbersome Paperwork
(AP) – Hawaiʻi conservation officials gave up federal funding for marine mammal protection because of cumbersome paperwork but say they are reapplying for it. A “joint enforcement agreement” had sent hundreds of thousands of federal dollars to the state’s Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement each year to help the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association better protect monk seals, spinner dolphins, sea turtles and other marine animals. Conservation enforcement chief Jason Redulla says the agency withdrew last year to recalibrate and make sure it can meet reporting requirements, and it plans to reapply later this month. While officials say the partnership is beneficial, they say the interruption had minimal impacts.
County Launches New Online Tool to Track Affordable Housing Projects
The County has launched a new online tool to help residents track and find affordable housing projects on Hawaiʻi Island. The County of Hawaiʻi Affordable Housing Dashboard provides a user-friendly interface where residents can easily view details such as project location and income limits, as well as status updates for the over 8,100 units in the affordable housing pipeline and thousands of existing rental units.
