    Feather Tying Ceremony to be hosted for BPS, MPS Class of 2024

    BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — Bismarck Public Schools and Mandan Public Schools are hosting their annual Feather Tying Ceremony for Indigenous seniors who are graduating.

    Feather tying is an example of recognition in the Indigenous community, and takes place when a major milestone has been completed. This tradition has cultural significance for the Indigenous community, and during the event, and seniors will select one person to represent them as a sponsor.

    This individual will then be invited on stage to tie a feather to their cap. Families will also honor their graduates by gifting them a blanket.

    “We want good for our relatives and good in their lives,” said BPS Indian Education Director Sashay Schettler. “Through this act, we show them love and encourage them.”

    According to a news release, the ceremony is taking place at Century High School on Saturday, May 25 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
