BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — Dakota Home Care was founded in July 2012 by Jamie Fleck, a nurse who saw the need for at-home care in our state after her friend suffered a life-altering stroke. Years later, Jamie’s legacy lives on through the foundation that she laid.

Caring, connection, creativity, can-do, and commitment are all the core values at Dakota Home Care a local family-owned care facility based in Bismarck.

“HHA CNA care provides people who want to stay in their home with service needs such as personal care, transportation, housekeeping, laundry, grocery shopping, companionship, dementia care, and hospice supportive care,” explained Dakota Home Care’s Director of Business, Development, and Client Services Charlene Seifert.

As we recently reported, Dakota Home Care also provides pediatric assistance, as well as aid for families who are in the hospital waiting to go home with their baby.

Dakota Home Care has been around for about 12 years, and most of the staff who are there now have been with the group for a while. Many of those at DHC say that it’s like working with family and that it’s much more different than nursing care in the corporate world.

“When we hire someone new,” Seifert continued, “we have a skills lab. We have a quality assurance and a training person, a nurse, Judy, who does all of that training. She’s been with us 12 years, since our inception. And she does a great job at training and skills lab testing. We have a 24-hour on-call nurse as well — so if anybody has any questions in the night, or scheduling issues, they can contact our on-call nurse for that.”

A part of Seifert’s job is to make sure that people are getting the right caregiver for them. If someone likes cooking, she will find a nurse who also likes to cook. She adds that this is what really sets them apart from other care services, adding that the quality of life is better for people at home rather than in a hospital or nursing home type of setting.

“A lot of the things that are done in a nursing home can be done at home,” concluded Seifert. “In the home setting, with our care, people can thrive.”

KX News brought those at Dakota Home Care A&B Pizza, feeding some of their staff, as we sat down with them in this month’s KX Gives Back.

While we were visiting with those at Dakota Home Care, we learned that their turnover rate is low compared to our national average. Theirs is at 17% and the national average is 18.4%. The national number can fluctuate between 5% to 38% depending on the number of beds.
