NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — Thousands of hunters are getting ready for hunting season all across North Dakota.

As soon as this Thursday, Canada Geese will be in season. Followed by the archery deer season on August 30.

But if you’re more of a bird hunter the Dove season starts September 1, followed by the Sandhill Crane season on September 14.

Youth deer season starts the same week, also on the 14th. Game and Fish professionals advise being mindful of where you hunt and whose land you’re on.

“A big thing would be the landowner’s respect and understand that these people are busy. It’s their property. North Dakota is a high percentage private property state and people need to be respectful of that,” said Shawn Sperling, the District Game Warden.

With so many hunters in the state, poaching can often become a problem.

Poaching, or the act of taking game both big and small, without the proper tag is illegal. And while the Division of Wildlife Resources reports only a little more than a thousand cases of poaching nationwide. Officials here are urging people that poaching is more than just a legal issue.

“One it’s illegal, two I think you are depriving a lot of people the opportunity to harvest something that could be a trophy in their eyes that you shouldn’t be taking,” said, Sperling.

To report poachers or any hunting violations you can contact the North Dakota Game and Fish Department at (701) 328-9921.

The department also just posted its new PLOTS guide, which is the Private Land Open to Sportsmen Guide. It’s made and done so that those seeking to make their mark in this year’s hunting season have a successful one.
