    Traffic stop leads to standoff and death in Southwest Minot

    MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — A traffic stop in Minot — and the police standoff that followed it — have resulted in one man’s death via self-inflicted gunshot wound on the evening of Saturday, August 24.

    According to the Minot Police Department, at approximately 7:35 p.m., a MPD officer conducted a traffic stop on Highway 2/52 near the 16th Street Southwest exit. As the officer made contact with a male driver, he brandished a handgun and made a threatening comment.

    In response, the officer took cover and attempted to communicate with the man, but did not receive a response. After approximately 30 minutes, the suspect sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound with the firearm. Officers approached and rendered aid. The man was then transported by Trinity Ambulance, where he was later pronounced dead.

    Members of the SWAT team also responded to the event. The area of Highway 2/52 between 16th Street Southwest and South Broadwas has since been cleared.

    The case is currently being treated as a suicide, and investigation into the incident is ongoing.
