RIVERDALE, ND ( KXNET ) — Throughout August and September, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will conduct vegetation management along the Missouri River.

The sandbars between Garrison Dam and Huff will be sprayed, but the Bismarck-Mandan river reach will not be treated.

The work being done is intended to keep those sandbars free of vegetation so that the piping plover, a small, endangered bird, can use them for nesting.

The spraying, which has been happening since 2012, will be done by way of helicopters, and only when weather conditions allow, like when there’s little wind and no rain.

Approximately 700 acres have been selected for treatment. Spraying will be done with two substances approved for aquatic use by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
