LEANDER, Texas (KXAN) — A Rouse High School student was injured after being hit by a vehicle in the school parking lot Thursday morning, school officials said.

In a letter to parents, Principal Vincent Hawkins said the incident happened around 8 a.m. during the student arrival period as the student was walking through the parking lot.

The student was treated by the school nurse until emergency services arrived, Hawkins said. The extent of the student’s injuries was not disclosed.

“The safety of our students is top priority, and our campus staff will continue to be vigilant during drop-off and pick-up times to help create the safest possible environment,” Hawkins said.

School leaders are asking drivers to “exercise patience and caution,” and parents are being asked to encourage children to use crosswalks when crossing streets or parking lots.

Last year, Leander City Council passed an ordinance requiring radar display signs be installed in any new school zones within city limits. At the time, the Leander Police Department said speeding had become a problem in school zones in the city.
