    Spokane Public Schools confirms Yasuhara Middle School student drowned in Spokane River

    SPOKANE, Wash. -- The child who died in the Spokane River in Riverfront Park Wednesday night was a Yasuhara Middle School student, according to Spokane Public Schools.

    SPS families received an email from the district informing them of the child's death.

    Additional counselors and support services will be available to staff and students at Yasuhara Thursday.

    According to Spokane Fire, four children jumped off the Orange Howard Street Bridge and only three resurfaced. The fourth child was pulled from the river by dive teams.

    Dear Yasuhara Community, It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that we share the news that a Yasuhara student passed away last night in a tragic accident. There are extra counselors at Yasuhara today, along with district administrators and other support specialists to work with staff and students to process their thoughts and emotions. We understand you may have questions, and unfortunately, we don’t have many answers yet and want to respect the privacy of those affected. We will always be here to support you and your students.
