LEWISTON, Idaho. -- A building fire caused thousands of dollars worth of damage near downtown Lewiston on Sunday afternoon, according to Lewiston Fire Department.

Around 12 p.m. on August 18, firefighters responded to a reported yard fire near 12th Street and 14th Avenue, about a five-minute drive south of downtown Lewiston.

As crews were on their way, they learned the fire had spread to a nearby fence and shop.

When they arrived, firefighters began putting out the shop fire. Crews entered the shop and knocked the fire down from within the attic.

Avista personnel also responded and secured the shop's power.

Fire officials said the fire had burned onto the neighboring property and damaged a fence and car.

Firefighters determined the fire was started by a hot ember from a BBQ smoker that was near some dry vegetation.

No injuries were reported and the damage is estimated at nearly $16,000.
