(CAÑON CITY, Colo.) — The Cañon City Police Department (CCPD) said two men were arrested on Wednesday, July 17 after an investigation into shots fired led to an hours-long standoff with CCPD’s SWAT team.

According to CCPD, on Wednesday, at around 8:30 p.m., officers were called to a home in the 800 block of Robbie Lane off of Central Avenue about a report of shots fired. When officers arrived, they learned a man had been shot in the leg and had taken himself to the hospital. Police also learned the victim was involved in an incident with one of the people in the home.

Police tried to make contact with those inside the home but were not successful, so a request was made for the CCPD and Fremont County SWAT teams, which, once they arrived, set up a perimeter around the house. After several hours of asking those inside the home to come out, several did leave and were found to not be involved in the shooting.

While officers tried to get additional people out of the home, detectives determined the suspected shooter, identified as 45-year-old Xavier Montoya, was still inside or on the property. SWAT robots and drones were used to try and clear the house but the SWAT team members eventually had to make entry and found two men hiding on the property.

One of the men was Montoya, who was later found in a shed, and the other, identified as 39-year-old Michael Trujillo, was found hiding underneath a bed.

Both men were arrested, and Montoya is facing charges of Second Degree Assault, Menacing, and Failure to Leave the Premises upon Request, while Trujillo is facing the charge of Failure to Leave the Premises upon Request.
