America’s Favorite Dog Breed: See who topped Colorado’s list

(COLORADO) — Ahead of International Dog Day on Aug. 26, a study has revealed Colorado’s favorite dog breed.

A survey was sent out to 10,000 dog owners across the country to find out which breeds rank supreme in the U.S. Many Americans were unbiased when it comes to dogs, with the largest percentage of respondents — 13% — reporting that “no breed in particular” is their favorite.

Dog owners in the U.S. picked the following dog breeds as their favorite:

• Australian Shepherd
• German Sheperd
• Bulldog
• Labrador Retriever
• Bernese Mountain Dog
• Beagle
• Golden Retriever
• Boston Terrier
• Boxer
• Shih Tzu
• Dachshund
• Siberian Husky

Overall, Colorado voted for German Shepherd as their favorite dog breed. These types of dogs are known as highly trainable and intelligent pets. They serve as search and rescue dogs and police K-9s, as well as aids in the military.

German Shepherds are a powerful breed, they are known to be loyal and generally healthy. Although the American Kennel Club (AKC) notes some dogs of this breed can experience bloat, a life-threatening swelling of the abdomen.

These dogs still have a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years according to the AKC. They are described as courageous, confident, and smart dogs.

The German shepherd ranked as the #1 favored dog breed in 16 states, the highest number in the study. The survey showed that 7.1% of respondents said their favorite breed was the however, they fell second to Australian Shepherds nationwide as 7.2% of respondents said this was their favorite breed.

Most American dog owners, 52%, said they selected their favorite dog breed based on either currently or formerly owning that breed. Respondents also voted on their least favorite dog breed.
