KYLE, Texas (KXAN) – The City of Kyle has purchased properties where five downtown businesses operate for more than $4 million as part of its continued efforts to revitalize its downtown.

While the city said it came to terms with the owners to purchase the properties at a “fair and reasonable” price, some were not expecting the news.

Lemonade business, the Main Squeeze, posted to Facebook , saying it was “blindsided” by the city’s actions.

“To say I’m not bummed would be a lie. But this will not discourage me, this will not stop me from being the natural-born hustler that I am, and this is not the end for The Main Squeeze,” the post continued.

Other businesses affected include Hays City Donuts, a pawn shop and a car wash. The businesses are located on North Burleson Street between Center Street and Lockhart Street.

While she was surprised by the announcement, the Main Squeeze owner Blanca Galvan said she could operate out of the current property for another year.

“I was blindsided because they hadn’t talked to us prior [to the announcement],” Galvan said. “But I do [understand] they couldn’t really speak about it until it was a done deal.”

“We’re on good terms and we [understand],” she added.

In a statement to KXAN, a City of Kyle spokesperson said the city is still negotiating the deals and none are finalized. The city said when it is time for the current occupants to leave, it will help them find different locations in Kyle.

“City of Kyle Economic Development has met with each of the business owners affected by the purchase to understand their future plans and ensure when the time comes, that the city will work with them to find a location for them in Kyle,” the spokesperson said. “The offers for these properties also include features, such as lease-back agreements to tenants and owners.”

The City of Kyle said these properties will be used for future projects to revitalize and develop the downtown.

“Future plan development will involve public input and outreach,” the city spokesperson said.
