Beloved Florida Eatery Carlos & Pepes Closes After 45 Years With Auction. Patrons Share Sadness

After writing about restaurants on Newsbreak for years, I've come to learn that some Floridians grieve when longtime, beloved restaurants close. It can feel as if you've lost part of your childhood or your favorite place to celebrate special occasions. Some Floridians in Fort Lauderdale may be experiencing these feelings as longtime eatery Carlos and Pepes closes.

About Carlos And Pepes: This eatery opened way back in 1979 and served the community with its authentic Mexican food. The eatery has been reviewed over 1,800 on Google reviews, where it earns 4.4 out of 5 stars.

Many reviewers note that this eatery served excellent food in a friendly manner with reasonable prices. A reviewer named Inna wrote, in part:

"This restaurant is a fantastic spot for dinner, meeting up with friends, or going on a date. The food is of excellent quality. Having been to Mexico, I can tell you that the flavors here bring back those great memories of authentic Mexican cuisine. The service is top-notch..."

What Happened Regarding The Closure?: Rumors reportedly started when the auction website Sunshine Auction Services posted a restaurant auction that said in part "Carlo's And Pepe's has closed its doors" and went on to list equipment that was for sale such as tables and chairs and bar equipment.

Additionally, on June 30, 2024, the restaurant posted to Instagram indicating that it was closing temporarily due to HVAC issues.

Eventually, on July 17, 2024, the restaurant again took to Instagram and indicated that after getting estimates for HVAC replacement and discussions with its landlord, it had been unable to reach a financial agreement and was therefore closing its brick and mortar store.

Sadness From Patrons: On a Facebook post from the restaurant announcing the initial closure, many expressed sadness at the closure. A posted named Jamie wrote:

"When we are able to get back to (Ft. Lauderdale) to visit, we always go to Carlos and Pepe’s. This was where we had our first date 37 years ago."

It isn't all bad news, however. The eatery has announced that it will continue to serve its food out of a food truck called Carlos & Pepe's On Wheels.
