Florida Burger King Shut Down After State Inspection - 3rd Closure

Although Floridians may know in their hearts that fast food isn't the healthiest meal option, it is reported that 37% of Americans eat some form of fast food every day. One arguably cheap option for Floridians is Florida-based Burger King, which currently has a meal deal for $5. Unfortunately, one Florida Burger King - on Brandon's Lumsdon Avenue - was recently temporarily shut down after a state inspection.

About Burger King In Florida: This chain has been home-grown since it debuted with the name Insta-Burger King in Jacksonville in the 1950s. The chain was slow to catch on at first, but things changed after the invention of the Whopper.

There are currently around 506 Burger King stores in Florida and it is headquartered in Miami-Dade County.

However, the chain has seen some changes in recent times. At the end of 2023, Burger King announced that it would be closing around 400 stores. As one example, I wrote about Florida losing two stores that had served for 40 years in Jacksonville.

The Burger King in question located at 2019 E Lumsden Road gets mixed reviews, earning 3.5 out of 5 stars on Google Reviews. Many complained about wait times or customer service issues.

A reviewer named Marcus wrote, in part:

"For starters, I am a lover of Burger King, but...I have to ask: Is it customary to serve patrons...cold food? The lady at the register knew it was cold and by the time we drove off, I chose to be the bigger person and not go back because she had the look of someone (who) is confrontational...If the worker did not want to be there, she should have just stayed home instead of taking out on paying customers who wanted to start their day off with a hot meal but instead giving food that may have been left out...(If) a person is that bold to serve cold food, what else is she willing to do to a customer's food?..."

What Happened At Inspection?: According to data from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, an inspection occurred on August 22, 2024. At that time, 8 violations were noted.

Examples of basic violations were dead roaches on a glue board, clean utensils being stored in a soiled container, ice build-up in the walk-in freezer, a soiled soda fountain, and unwashed tomatoes being stored with ready-to-eat produce.

An intermediate violation came because the water in the handwash sink was too cold at 74 degrees.

A high-priority violation was noted because of the observation of rodent droppings.

As a result of some of the above, the restaurant was temporarily shut down. A follow-up on August 23, 2024, yielded zero violations, so the restaurant "met inspection standards" and was free to reopen.

This is not the first closure for this location. It also had closures in January of 2020 and September of 2021.

Please note that an inspection is one moment in time and not necessarily how a restaurant conducts itself every day.
