Longtime FL Eatery Patrons Describe As "Quirky", New England Moorings, Shut Down After Inspection

Florida is a state that has many residents who used to live somewhere else. So restaurants inspired by other areas - like New York, Chicago, or Cape Cod can do well in the Sunshine State. Unfortunately, one such eatery, Cape Coral's New England Moorings, was recently temporarily shut down after a state inspection.

About New England Moorings: This eatery opened back in 1987 and was founded by a Bostonian who preferred warm weather. A plumbing business that didn't work out turned into a try at a restaurant and the rest is Cape Coral history. Reviews indicate that the eatery is a fun place to eat quality seafood and enjoy drinks in a festive atmosphere.

The eatery located at 1326 SE 16 Place receives 4.5 out of 5 stars on Google reviews and some patrons affectionately call it "quirky." For example, a reviewer named Jessica writes:

"I loved everything about this quirky place! It’s literally like going to dinner at your best friend’s place. Al is an incredible host with great stories and hospitality. The seafood is delicious and you grab your own drinks from behind the bar. So fun."

What Happened At Inspection?: According to data from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, an inspection occurred on August 19, 2024. At that time, 11 violations were noted.

Examples of basic violations were the men's bathroom facility being in disrepair, a walk-in cooler not maintaining a "cold hold," and a dead roach observed in the women's restroom.

Some intermediate violations were for the "hot water supply not (being) maintained during peak periods," no paper towels or soap at the handwashing sink, and a spray bottle with a "toxic substance" not being labeled.

High-priority violations came from the observation of "hot shot" spray and "cockroach gel bait," plus the observation of live roaches.

As a result of some of the above violations, the restaurant was temporarily shut down.

At a follow-up inspection on August 20th, 3 violations remained, but none were considered an immediate threat to the public, so although a follow-up inspection is required, the restaurant was free to reopen.

Please note that an inspection is one moment in time and not necessarily how a restaurant conducts itself every day.
