Northside Elementary and Coulee Montessori start school year with new schedule

LA CROSSE (WKBT) -- By mid-July most children are about halfway through their summer vacation, but students at Northside Elementary and Coulee Montessori are starting a little earlier this year.

On Monday, the schools began their year-round schedule.

The theme for the year is "Growing Together," inspired by the introduction of their new educational greenhouse and the celebration of 10 years since the schools were consolidated at their current location.

Principle Sarah Brandle said she's excited to keep the growing going.

"I'm so looking forward to watching our kids and our staff and myself grow, even as an administrator. We did a lot of great things last year. We reduced our absenteeism by 50 percent which was huge. And so, we just want to keep growing on what we accomplished last year and just keep doing great things," said Brandle.

Under the new schedule, students will attend school for nine-week periods with 2-3-week breaks, known as intercessions, throughout the year. Summer vacation will also be shortened to six weeks.
