La Crosse family celebrates journey to homeownership with help from Habitat for Humanity

LA CROSSE (WKBT)-- An unforgettable moment for one La Crosse family. Today the Yang family is calling a new Habitat for Humanity home theirs.

" I feel excited about the whole process. We got to help build this house," Seng Yang said.

The yang family worked with habitat for humanity to build the four bedroom, two bath, 1,700 square foot home. Prior to its construction

they were living in a rental unit that was too expensive and unsafe.

"Getting to see the area around here, we feel a lot safer," Yang explained. "Coming here volunteering and working the hours, I can see this is a nice neighborhood compared to where I'm from.

Habitat for Humanity has built many homes in the Coulee Region, but this one is a little different.

"Habitat for Humanity purchased this lot from the City of La Crosse so it's actually a flood plain property," executive director Kahya Fox said. "We had to start the project by bringing in a whole bunch of fill to bring the land up above the base flood levels and we started building a single-family home."

Yang and his family are looking forward to moving in and making memories that last a lifetime.
