SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Authorities arrested a man Tuesday in La Mesa after firing several beanbag rounds at the suspect who reached for what was believed to be a handgun at the time, police said.

Around 6:48 a.m., police received multiple 9-1-1 calls about a person waving a knife and walking in the street in the 5800 block of Kelton Avenue, Katy Lynch with the La Mesa Police Department said in a news release.

When officers arrived on scene, the man, who appeared to be linked to a white Toyota Yaris parked on the curb, was still armed with the knife. Police say he then grabbed a handgun from a bag and placed the weapon on the curb next to him.

“Officers requested additional resources and attempted to de-escalate the subject, but he continued to pace in the street or sit on the curb next to the handgun,” Lynch said.

About 20 minutes later, the suspect reached for the handgun when an officer deployed several beanbag rounds. The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Bryce Segaux of Inglewood, was quickly taken into custody.

Officers found a suspicious device consisting of several five-gallon red tanks as they searched the suspect’s vehicle.

The San Diego Sheriff’s Bomb Squad was called in and temporarily evacuated several residents in the area, but the device was determined as not explosive. All residents were able to return to their homes at 10 a.m.

The handgun found at the scene was confirmed as a replica, however, the suspect was discovered to have an outstanding felony arrest warrant out of Los Angeles and will be booked at county jail.

Kelton Avenue, between El Paso Street and Zeta Street, was closed temporarily for several hours during the incident.
