    La Plata man shoots parents’ TV set

    On July 13, Officer S. Harden of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded to an incident at a residence on Port Tobacco Road in La Plata after the sound of gunshots was reported. In court documents, Harden said a man identified as Alfredo Jason Arroyo, 45, of La Plata fired shots at his parents’ television set following a verbal argument.

    According to Harden, the defendant was “angry with his father because he advised his son he was changing their service provider from Direct TV to ROKU.”

    The defendant threatened to shoot the television set and his father then dared him to do it. After the shooting, Arroyo threatened his father after he called police, according to charging documents.

    In charging papers, Harden said Arroyo used a shotgun to shoot the TV. Responding investigators confiscated other rifles at the residence.

    Arroyo is charged with two counts of first-degree assault and one count each of malicious destruction of property, intoxicated endangerment and reckless endangerment.

    Later, Arroyo was released on his own recognizance. A district court hearing on the charges he is facing is scheduled for Aug. 9.

    Woman charged as a fugitive

    On July 12, Charles sheriff’s office Patrolman Michael Wagner arrested Heather Marie Tunney, 40, of La Plata, charging her with being a fugitive from Virginia.

    According to court papers, Tunney is wanted in Stafford County, Va., for failure to stop at an accident scene.

    After initially being held with bond, Tunney was released on her own recognizance on Monday. A district court hearing on her fugitive charge is scheduled for Aug. 14.

    Waldorf man charged with assault

    On July 12, Charles sheriff’s office personnel were sent to a residence in Waldorf for the report of a domestic assault.

    A verbal argument between a man and woman escalated. The man, identified as Guadalupe Campos Ramos Jr., 64, of Waldorf, allegedly threatened his accuser with a gun. The investigating officer, Patrolman H. Gould, stated Ramos’ accuser grabbed a belt and swung it at the defendant.

    Ramos denied he pointed the gun at the woman, Gould reported in court papers.

    Ramos was charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault and violation of a protective order.

    On Monday, Ramos was released on his own recognizance. A district court hearing on the charges he is facing is scheduled for Aug. 9.

    Suspects in prom night robbery arrested

    On May 10 at 7:30 p.m., two people approached a teenage male who was leaving a prom party on Devongate Street in Waldorf. According to a Charles County Sheriff’s Office press release, they placed one firearm to the victim’s abdomen and another to his head and demanded the victim’s designer watch. They fled in a dark-colored sedan.

    The sheriff’s office reports through investigation, detectives identified two suspects and obtained arrest warrants for Ryle Michael Mili, 24, of Waldorf and Jeremiah Hames Jenkins, 19, of White Plains.

    On July 7, officers assigned to the sheriff’s office’s judicial services located Mili leaving his house in a vehicle on Harvest Fish Place in Waldorf. Officers initiated a traffic stop and took Mili into custody. During the traffic stop, the driver, Anthony Torren Jefferson, 19, of Waldorf, was found to be in possession of a loaded gun with an extended magazine. Jefferson was also arrested.

    A search warrant was obtained for Mili’s residence where investigators located evidence linking him to the robbery. Detectives also recovered a loaded polymer 80 gun with an extended magazine, a drum magazine and rifle ammunition.

    Mili was charged with armed robbery, first-degree assault, use of a firearm during the commission of a crime and other related charges.

    Jefferson was charged with illegal possession of a firearm, handgun on a person, and handgun in a vehicle.

    On July 11, Jenkins was located and arrested. He was charged with armed robbery, first-degree assault and other related charges. All three men are being held without bond.

    Lexington Park man charged with assault

    On July 10, deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office began investigating the report of an assault on two women in Lexington Park by an unknown male who also purportedly exposed himself during the incident.

    On July 11, new video evidence and information obtained by deputies indicated that the original allegations were factually inaccurate. Deputies established that at approximately 8:15 p.m., on July 10, while walking near FDR Boulevard and South Shangri-La Drive, a single female victim was assaulted by a male suspect who made nonconsensual sexual contact with her, according to a sheriff’s office press release.

    The victim pushed the suspect away, and he then displayed an edged weapon in a threatening manner. The woman was able to leave the area without further interaction with the suspect. Video surveillance showed no other victims and no exposure by the suspect, as was initially alleged.

    Malik Antwann Price, 21, of Lexington Park was identified as a suspect, located and arrested July 11.

    Price was charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and fourth-degree sex offense. He is being held without bond. A district court hearing regarding the charges Price is facing is scheduled for Aug. 8.

    The sheriff’s office reports its investigation into the disparities of the original statements given by the two females is ongoing.

    Drugs and guns recovered as one is arrested

    St. Mary’s sheriff’s deputies from the criminal investigations and patrol divisions executed a search warrant at a residence on Columbus Drive in Lexington Park at approximately 8:15 a.m. July 11. The search resulted in the recovery of suspected crack cocaine, suspected psilocybin mushrooms and a shotgun.

    According to a sheriff’s office press release, Dayton Caldwell Harris, 56, of Lexington Park was arrested. Harris, who had been the subject of an ongoing investigation, is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a prior felony conviction.

    Harris has been charged with possession with intent to distribute drugs, possession of equipment for the production of drugs and illegal possession of a regulated firearm.

    Harris was ordered held without bond. A district court hearing on the charges he is facing is scheduled for Aug. 8.

    Man, 19, facing weapon charge

    On July 9, St. Mary’s sheriff’s office detectives executed a search and seizure warrant on a residence on Dayflower Place in Lexington Park as part of an ongoing investigation.

    During the search, detectives recovered a 9 mm handgun in a bedroom belonging to Zemar David-Tyshon Batts, 19. Batts was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of a regulated firearm by an individual under the age of 21.

    Additionally, a second firearm identified as having been stolen from Hagerstown in 2017 was found during the search. No charges were issued and the investigation regardng the stolen weapon is ongoing.

    Following a hearing, Batts was released on his recognizance. A district court hearing on the charge he is facing is scheduled for Aug. 13.

    Lexington Park man charged with assaulting pregnant woman

    On July 5, Trooper Ryan Rosenblatt of the Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barrack went to a home on Franklin Road in Lexington Park to investigate an alleged domestic assault.

    Rosenblatt’s investigation revealed a verbal argument in the home’s yard preceded the alleged assault in which a 21-year-old woman who said she was pregnant was assaulted.

    The woman claimed Jefferson Eduardo Alvarez-Contreras, 20, of Lexington Park pushed her into nearby shrubbery then obtained a metal mallet. The woman claimed Alvarez-Contreras threatened to break her phone and “smash her face” with the mallet, Rosenblatt stated in court documents.

    The woman said she went into the house and came back out with a kitchen knife, intending to defend herself. She alleged the defendant grabbed her wrists, causing her to drop the knife. He then allegedly shoved her to the ground, kicked her in the head several times and attempted to strangle her, the trooper stated in court papers.

    Alvarez-Contreras’ accuser told the trooper when she got to her feet the defendant “punched her in the abdomen and stated he no longer wanted to have a baby with her.”

    Alvarez-Contreras fled the scene before police arrived.

    On Monday, a four-count indictment was handed down in circuit court, charging Alvarez-Contreras with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, crime of violence against a pregnant person and misdemeanor theft.

    A warrant for Alvarez-Contreras’ arrest was issued and served Monday. He is being held without bond.

    Deputies investigate a double shooting

    On Sunday at approximately 9:41 p.m., deputies from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Bureau responded to a home on Mint Court in Prince Frederick for the report of shots fired.

    Upon arrival, deputies discovered a middle-aged man had been struck in the leg and a middle-aged woman had been shot several times in the upper body.

    A preliminary investigation revealed someone shot several rounds into the front of the residence ultimately striking two people. Both were transported to area trauma centers for injuries received. The woman was in critical condition while the man was listed in stable condition.

    On Tuesday, the sheriff’s office announced the arrest of Andre Xavier Howe, 17, of Huntingtown in connection with the shooting incident. According to a sheriff’s office report, Howe is currently being held at the Calvert jail and is being charged as an adult.

    He faces multiple charges, including two counts each of attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, use of a firearm in a felony/violent crime, plus one count each of possession of a firearm under the age of 21 and possession of a stolen firearm. The investigation is ongoing.

    St. Leonard man charged with vehicle theft

    On July 6, Deputy Antonio Tavares of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office was on patrol in the Lusby area when he spotted a Suzuki motorcycle traveling in the area of Route 2/4 and Calvert Cliffs State Park with “no registration visible on the rear.”

    Tavares subsequently stopped the cycle at Route 2/4 and Rousby Hall Road. The operator of the Suzuki GSX-R600 was identified as Devin Leigh Harmon, 33, of St. Leonard.

    Tavares stated in charging papers that Harmon claimed he had just purchased the bike. However, a check of the vehicle identification number indicated the cycle was possibly stolen through Baltimore County.

    Harmon was charged with felony theft, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and unauthorized removal of a motor vehicle.

    He was released on his own recognizance July 7. A district court hearing on the charges Harmon is facing is scheduled for Aug. 7.

    D.C. man faces weapons charges

    On July 6, Deputy Michael Dailey of the Calvert sheriff’s office was on patrol in the Dunkirk area when he spotted a vehicle on Route 4 and Ward Road and noted the driver appeared to be passed out. Dailey wrote in court documents that when he contacted the driver, he “moved slowly and seemed confused.”

    The motorist was identified as Thornton Kahlil Kendrick, 29, of Washington, D.C.

    A search of Kendrick’s vehicle yielded a Glock Model 23 40-caliber, semi-automatic handgun. The search also revealed approximately 36 grams of suspected psilocybin.

    A check with the gun center confirmed the weapon was not stolen and was not registered. It was also learned that Kendrick was not supposed to have the gun.

    “Kendrick is prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm due to a federal and Maryland state conviction,” Dailey wrote in court papers.

    Kendrick was charged with loaded handgun in vehicle, handgun in vehicle, illegal possession of ammunition and drug possession.

    On July 8 Kednrick posted $5,000 bail and was released from the detention center. A district court hearing on the charges he is facing is scheduled for Aug. 17.

    Mountain State fugitive nabbed in Calvert

    On July 10 a 35-year-old Prince Frederick man was apprehended by Calvert sheriff’s deputies and charged with being a fugitive from West Virginia.

    According to court documents, Andrew J. Wegner is wanted in Hardy County, W.Va., for theft of services.

    Wegner, who court records show has voluntarily waived extradition to West Virginia, is being held without bond. A district court hearing on the fugitive charge is scheduled for Aug. 9.

    Lusby man faces drug and reckless driving charges

    On July 11, a 43-year-old Lusby man was apprehended by Calvert County sheriff’s deputies after trying to elude officers pursuing his vehicle in the Solomons area, across the Gov. Thomas Johnson Bridge and into St. Mary’s County.

    In court documents filed by Detective Howard Anderson, the defendant, Kevil Casswell Gregory, was observed “coming and going from multiple vehicles in shopping centers.” The defendant was believed to be distributing drugs, alleged to be suspected crack cocaine.

    Deputies began to pursue the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Gregory was driving, and the defendant reached a speed of approximately 100 mph in an effort to elude police.

    According to court papers, Gregory drove recklessly and allegedly tossed a cellphone and suspected drugs out of the vehicle during the pursuit. Gregory was subsequently stopped and arrested.

    He has been charged with possession with intent to distribute narcotics, two counts of drug possession, reckless endangerment and altering physical evidence. Gregory was issued several traffic citations, charging him with speeding, reckless driving, negligent driving, attempting to elude police, unsafe lane changes and driving while suspended.

    Gregory is being held without bond. A district court hearing on the charges he is facing is scheduled for Aug. 9.
