Moratorium will temporarily prevent mass development in historic communities
CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - Three historic communities will gain access to an extra layer of protection from mass development following a council-driven action. A moratorium approved 5 to 3 on Tuesday by Charleston County Council adds a shield to the Ten Mile, Beesfield and Phillips communities. Each has felt the pressure of growth seeping into their front yards.
City Council Highlights - July 23, 2024
Isle of Palms City Council held its regular meeting on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at Council Chambers in City Hall. Listed below are the highlights from the meeting:. City Council received an update from Steven Traynum from Coastal Science and Engineering, about the condition of the beach at Breach Inlet and Beachwood East, which continue to be impacted by erosion. City Council approved an emergency expenditure for the installation of sandbags along the erosional area of 130-304 Ocean Boulevard, where properties are within 20’ feet of the erosion, to provide protection until the start of the US Army Corps of Engineer’s Beneficial Use Project this fall. The beneficial use project involves placing approximately 550,000 cubic yards of beach compatible sand along the inter tidal zone between 2nd Avenue and 10th Avenue.
Beaufort County Walk for Water set for Sept. 14, 21
1,000 walkers expected to raise money for access to clean, safe water. Registration is open for the eighth annual Beaufort County Walk for Water on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Live Oaks Park in Port Royal and Sept. 21 at Wright Family Park in Bluffton. An estimated 1,000 walkers are expected to participate, helping raise a record $100,000 to fight the global water crisis.

Carson Messina signs with Toronto Blue Jays
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - For the 2nd time this week, a member of the Messina household in Summerville has signed a deal to play professional baseball. Green Wave alum Carson Messina came to terms with the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday after the team made him a 12th round pick in the MLB Draft last week. Messina is getting a signing bonus of $550,000 according to Baseball America which is way above the slot value of the pick which is around $125,000. The extra money shows how badly Toronto wanted to get Messina signed.
Deputies: South Carolina man admits setting up camera to capture child using the restroom
Deputies in South Carolina say a man faces charges after he admitted he took video of a child using the bathroom and had other sexual videos of a child on his phone. The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said they arrested Jose Pilar Marquez Guzman, 36, of Ravenel, Monday after a search warrant was served on his home on Branton Road.

Every couple of weeks, according to the health center, eight to ten residents get together to make cookies that are distributed to homeless people in the greater Charleston area.

ROCKINGHAM — The central Carolinas are under a flood watch for the next several days as more rain is expected. The National Weather Service has issued an areal flood watch until midnight July 26, with a total of up to two inches of rain forecast for Richmond County through Thursday evening.
