Residents living near Highway 30 around County Roads 225/237 may continue to smell smoke when they walk outside after a large brush fire left a large area scorched.

The Lafayette County Fire Department was dispatched at 2:24 p.m. on Sunday to the area where a fire had spread to both sides of the should of Highway 30.

It was unknown what caused the fire that burned about 5 acres of grass and brush. The LCFD contained the fire and requested aid from the Mississippi Forestry Service due to the spreading into the woodland area.

The LCFD and MS Forestry Service were able to extinguish the fire.
