LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) — In August 2023, a mass shooting in Lafayette that took the life of an 18-month-old child and wounded five others rocked the community.
The shooting that killed young Kaci Cyprian also severely wounded two Lafayette Police officers. One of those officers, Hali Bradford, faces a long, painful and expensive rehabilitation of her injuries, for which she has to pay thousands of dollars out of her pocket.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help get Bradford back on her feet.
The shooting, which occurred three weeks after her wedding and two days before her 25th birthday, resulted in six hours of emergency surgery and lingering paralysis of her left foot. Therapies that her medical insurance covers have proven unsuccessful 10 months after the incident.
Bradford has found a doctor in Lake Charles, Dr. Kyle Daigle, who specializes in injuries that she suffers from. She went for her first week of treatment recently and has since regained partial movement, more progress than she has made with any other treatment.
She and her husband, Adam, are both police officers at the Lafayette Police Department, whose worker’s compensation insurance does not cover the treatment.
An anonymous donor paid for the first week of therapy, but according to the GoFundMe post, Bradford will be required to pay out of pocket, totaling about $1,500-2,000 per week, with continued treatment for at least a year, if not longer. There are also other home devices to be purchased aside from the cost for the weekly visits to the doctor’s office.
“She would like to continue her journey in growing her family, becoming the competitive CrossFit athlete she once was, and eventually returning to full duty as a police officer to continue to do what she loves, serving and protecting the citizens of her city,” the post reads.
The GoFundMe has a goal of raising $50,000. As of early Thursday afternoon, it has generated $6,305 from 78 donors.
