LAFAYETTE, La. ( KLFY ) — If you’re a customer of SLEMCO , the utility has some good news for you: Your bill is going down soon.

The 24-month storm rider for Hurricanes Laura, Delta and Ida will soon be dropped from SLEMCO bills, the power company announced Monday. SLEMCO announced in a social media post that the storm rider, which has been on customers’ bills since August 2022, will be removed as of the July 2024 billing period.

The savings per customer will vary based on how much power customers use each month, SLEMCO said. The power company estimated that the cost decrease will be about $1.90 per month for a home that uses 1,500 kwh; $3.75 for a home that uses about 3,000 kwh per month and even more for homes that use more electricity.

“If the costs are such that we need to get recouped for the money that was used for the storm, we’re going to be totally upfront and honest,” SLEMCO Communications Coordinator Mary Laurent said. “We’re going to tell you what we need. We’re going to tell you when it starts. We’re going to tell you when it ends.”

“While none of us have a crystal ball to predict excessive storm costs in the future, we can absolutely tell you that if we say a new charge to your SLEMCO bill is temporary – we mean just that. It’s temporary,” SLEMCO’s announcement read.

“We’re not going to bill on a ‘what if’. It’s always going to be on what really happened,” Laurent said. “We’re going to be upfront, and we’re going to be clear and concise about what it’s for and why we’re charging it.”

SLEMCO provides power to 110,000 members in the parishes of Acadia, Avoyelles, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin and Vermilion.
