LaFayette High School football stadium to receive new LED lighting system

The Chambers County School District approved the low bid of $225,873 for a new LED lighting system for LaFayette High School’s football stadium from S. Electrical Contractors during this week’s board meeting.

In June, the CCSD put out a bid for the installation of a complete and operational lighting system for the Lafayette High School Football field.

The other bidders were Floyd Services Company with a bid of $271,320 and JJ&J Electrical Repair with a bid of $226,000.

During the meeting, Chambley said, in answer to a question by Board member Jennifer Hunt, that the new LED lighting should last for at least 20 to 25 years. The light upgrade comes with a 10-year warranty.

Though the school district has been ordered to consolidate LaFayette High School and Valley High School, the football stadium will still be used. LHS’s campus will become the new J.P. Powell STEAM Magnet School.

“So regardless of what happens, they’ll still use that facility … for middle school purposes and middle school athletic events,” Chambley said.

According to Chambley, the lighting upgrade will be a simpler update because it will be done by the same lighting system as the current ones. He said they will be able to easily replace the lights on the light poles rather than having to set up a whole new lighting system.

“That’s the reason that this is a much cheaper fit than was the fit at Valley High. They weren’t able to do that fit. They weren’t like that. The lights at Valley High were much older and they were not able to just take them off and set them [up],” Chambley said.

“So they will come all assembled. Everything will be ready. They’ll take a crane and they’ll take it and pull the light pole off and set the other one on,” he added.

According to the bid advertisement, 60 calendar days were allowed for the construction of the project.
