To some, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. The Los Angeles Chargers are engaging with that as they continue to trot out Easton Stick as if he is a quality backup quarterback.

Generally with Justin Herbert , the backup is far from important. But he is dealing with an injury to his plantar fascia, a notoriously painful and unpredictable.

The point is that the Chargers have no answer if Herbert is held out of a game due to injury.

So far in the preseason Stick is 13 of 26 for 116 yards. He has thrown two interceptions, a fumbled snap, and no touchdown with a combined QB rating of 31.6.

While he wasn’t much better in the 2023 preseason, he was pushing the ball down the field. His average depth of target was 8.9 yards. So far this year, it is just 5.5 yards. His completion percentage was also a full 10 points higher.

Stick also played better when he came in for the injured Herbert last year, but the offense was completely stalled. In those five games, the team were outscored 71-149. Despite this, the new Chargers regime resigned Stick to a one-year $2.5 million contract.

There aren’t currently many great options available in free agency, but there is a former starting QB and several proven viable backups. Ryan Tannehill is available and so is Trevor Siemian and Blaine Gabbert . If the Chargers don’t care for those options, they could kick the can down the road and shop the waiver wire once all 32 teams are required to get down to 53 players on August 27th.

There is also the trade option. The Cleveland Browns currently have Jamies Winston, Dorian Thompson Robinson, and Tyler Huntley on their roster. Huntley was brought on to the Baltimore Ravens while the current Chargers offensive coordinator was on the team.
