Two people were injured during a fire overnight on S. Lee Street in LaGrange.

Around 9:31 p.m. Thursday night, the LaGrange Fire Department, along with Troup County Fire Department, were dispatched to a structure fire in the 500 block of S. Lee Street.

First responders rushed to the location as initial reports indicated individuals were still inside the burning home.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the attic and front door of the residence, but residents outside the home said no additional people were inside.

According to LFD, fire personnel attempted an initial search of the home but met challenges due to excessive accumulation of possessions throughout the home, obstructing pathways that created hazardous conditions.

A second round of searching allowed firefighters to confirm no other occupants were inside the structure.

The fire was brought under control at 10:05 p.m. and the fire was believed to be fully extinguished by 11:01 p.m. However, despite the apparent containment, a rekindling incident required a secondary response at 2 a.m.

Firefighters took a defensive strategy due to hazardous conditions within the residence and were able to gain control of the fire by 3:14 a.m. and fully extinguish the fire by 4 a.m.

Public Works deployed a mini excavator for debris removal to ensure complete fire suppression and the Red Cross was called for assistance.

Both residents sustained moderate injuries and were transported to West Georgia Medical Center.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
