Two of Gov. Eric Holcomb’s top financial appointees recently visited the Lake County Government Center in Crown Point.

Department of Local Government Finance Commissioner Dan Shackle and Indiana State Comptroller Elise Nieshalla met with Lake County Council President Christine Cid, County Assessor Latonya Spearman, Treasurer John Petalas and more than a dozen other local officials.

Shackle and Nieshalla have been visiting counties across the state to gather with local officials for meet and greets. During the informal sessions, they share their office functions and responsibilities.

Cid said the gathering was a chance to put names with faces. Shackle recently marked one year in office. Nieshalla was appointed Dec. 1.

Shackle works with township and county assessors for property tax collections. The office also reviews local government budgets.

Other elected officials in attendance included State Sen. Dan Dernulc, State Rep. Julie Olthoff, Gary City Councilwoman Lori Latham, Schererville Clerk Treasurer Michael Troxell, Munster Clerk Treasurer Wendy Mis, Winfield Clerk Treasurer Rick Anderson and Merrillville Clerk Treasurer Eric January.

The visit follows the release of Nieshalla’s State of Indiana 2023 annual comprehensive financial report. The report is the official audited record of state finances.

“Indiana’s ACFR provides tangible evidence of our state’s strong financial position,” said Nieshalla. “In sharing Indiana’s low debt, low pension fund liability, healthy cash reserves, balanced budget and AAA credit rating, we are reminded how good it is to be a Hoosier.”
