Homes remain evacuated as wildfire burns in Lake Elsinore area

Evacuation orders remain in place for parts of Lake Elsinore Friday as a wildfire continues to burn in Riverside County.

Helicopters made multiple water drops overnight in support of ground crews that were digging containment lines.

Fire officials said winds also died down allowing for significant progress to be made. Fire crews increased containment from 0% Thursday night to 15% by 1 a.m. Friday.

The fire also only increased by 11 acres overnight from 134 acres to 145 acres Friday morning, according to Cal Fire .

Evacuation orders are in place for properties south of Grand Avenue, east of Fairview Street and west of the Ortega Highway, which is closed from Grand Avenue to the Orange County Line until further notice.

Grand Avenue is also closed from Machado to Maiden Lane.

An evacuation center has been opened at Elsinore High School located at 21800 Canyon Drive in Wildomar.

The “Macy Fire” was first reported Thursday around 5:45 p.m. near the intersection of Orange and Macy streets in El Cariso, an unincorporated community in Lake Elsinore, according to the Riverside Fire Department.

The fire quickly spread and headed directly toward homes.

At least one structure has been destroyed.

No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
