Lake Oswego senior Max Reckerman is committed to pursue his soccer career at the collegiate level at Cal State University San Marcos (CSUSM),

On Friday, April 5, the future Cougar took a moment to discuss his decision alongside a taste of what the future might hold at CSUSM.

According to Reckerman, he’ll be studying at CSUSM next year while a senior-laden team has its last go-around, before an impending roster spot will be opened-up to the Laker a season later.

While Reckerman admits his circumstances are rare, he’s nothing but excited to head south and see what’s next.

He says San Marcos is an inviting place, with draws outside the world of soccer.

“Honestly the campus was amazing and felt like home right away,” Reckerman said. “I also wanted to be in California, which was another bonus. The head coach Ron Pulvers also played a big part in helping me fully commit to the school.”

Reckerman helped the Lakers to an appearance in the 6A semifinals last fall, playing a pivotal role as an attacking midfielder and a captain for his team.

And while Reckerman’s time may be running out at Lake Oswego High, he can’t help but reflect on some of the moments that truly made it home for the last four years.

“One of my favorites was in my sophomore year; what me and my teammates call ‘Miracle at Cobb.’ We won 4-1 against a very good Lakeridge side. They were unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the state while we were fighting to get a playoff spot,” Reckerman said. “My other favorite memory was my whole senior year. We had an extremely beautiful group of players that all wanted to prove everyone wrong. We ended up making it to the semifinals for the first time in a decade. I’ll never forget that.”

As the current Laker looks ahead to his time spent at CSUSM, he’ll hope to bring some of the magic of that senior season along for the ride.
