Lake Oswego resident Carrie Brunner first started donating blood when she was around 18 years old after hearing that a radio station was giving away prizes to those who did so. Over 50 years later, Brunner is still donating and in July she will pass the milestone of 25 gallons provided to the American Red Cross. She has donated blood a few times a year every year since she started.

“It was really good to know you’re helping someone. It makes you feel good,” she said.

Brunner wants people to know that donating blood is not too difficult. It doesn’t take much time, is mostly painless and simply requires a bit of extra rest for a day or two afterward. For each gallon she has donated, Brunner has received a gallon donation pin from the Red Cross.

“It’s a great way to volunteer. It doesn’t cost anything except a pint of blood. And you get it replenished in 48-72 hours afterward,” she said.

According to the American Red Cross website, every two seconds someone is in need of blood in the United States. The organization provides about 40% of blood and blood components in the country.

“It is essential for surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries. Whether a patient receives whole blood, red cells, platelets or plasma, this lifesaving care starts with one person making a generous donation,” the website reads.

The Red Cross added that supply does not always meet demand because 3% of age-eligible people donate blood yearly.

Brunner said she takes iron pills because having sufficient iron levels is one of the eligibility requirements for blood donation. Others include that the donor is 16 years old, weighs at least 110 pounds and is in good health and feeling well. For more information, visit https://www.redcross.org/give-blood.html.
