Report shows Hoffman Construction leasing space in Lake Oswego
Following news of a planned departure from Portland, Hoffman Construction appears slated to open a new headquarters in Lake Oswego. According to a fourth quarter 2023 market report from CBRE, the construction company is leasing out over 45,000 square feet of space at the Kruse Oaks Corporate Park on Meadows Road. The news was first reported by the Portland Business Journal. Hoffman Construction has not returned inquiries from Pamplin Media...
Oregon legislative committee proposes restoring penalties for drug possession
Oregon lawmakers have proposed expanding addiction treatment coupled with reinstating criminal penalties for possession of small amounts of specified drugs. The latter recommendation from a joint House-Senate committee, which on Tuesday, Jan. 23, released its framework for legislation in the 2024 session, already is drawing criticism from two sides. Treatment advocates say that the proposal reverses what voters approved in a 2020 ballot measure, which removed penalties in favor of...

2024 AMG Mercedes-Benz GLE53 Coupe is high-performance SUV
For many years the AMG versions of Mercedes-Benz vehicles were guaranteed to offer their highest level of performance. The independent engineering firm turned out factory-approved models with more power, sportier suspensions, bigger brakes, special interiors, and unique trim. But then Mercedes brought AMG in house and some AMG-badged models have seemed to offer more style than substance to me. That is not a problem with the 2024 AMG GLE53 Coupe which — despite its name — is actually a high-performance four-door fastback midsize crossover SUV....

West Linn representative wants to fight tolling, use CHIPS money for child care in 2024 legislative session
To a body builder, “leg days” likely mean squats, lunges and other exercises focusing on the quads, hamstrings and glutes. Rep. Jules Walters, D-West Linn, and other Oregon lawmakers however spend their “leg days” in caucus meetings flexing the strengths of the bills they plan to propose in the coming legislative session. On Jan. 12, Walters submitted two proposals to the legislative council, which will help to turn them into official bills to be hashed out over the five-week short session beginning Feb. 5. ...
Clackamas County veteran wins free vehicle from Cars 4 Heroes
Clackamas County resident Rhiannon Smith benefited from a nonprofit organization that provides free basic transportation to veterans, active-duty military and first responders who are unable to obtain it on their own. Smith, a resident of West Linn, on Jan. 19 received a free car from veteran-owned Town Center Automotive in Clackamas, which also surprised her with $300 in cash and a certificate for one year of complimentary oil changes. Cars...
Lake Oswego residents can drop off tree debris at two events
To help residents clean up the wreckage from a historic wind and ice storm, the city of Lake Oswego is hosting tree debris disposal events this week. The events will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26 and the same time Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Westlake Park parking lot off Melrose Street. The free event is only for storm-related debris. That debris should be limited to plant materials like branches, stems and cut up tree trunks. “Residents may make as many trips as necessary to the drop sites. We encourage neighbors to work together (particularly those with hauling capacity!). Please be prepared to unload debris from your vehicle independently,” a city release states. For more information on these opportunities and other things to do in the wake of the storm, visit www.ci.oswego.or.us/planning/storm-recovery-debris-resources.
OPINION: Clackamas County plays dangerous economic game by cutting equity and inclusion office
The Clackamas County Equity and Inclusion office will not have a chance to fulfill its mission to honor and celebrate the County’s diverse employees and residents and create greater Countywide “safety, connection, and belonging.” The County now loses essential translation, interpretation, and hearing accommodations, employee resource groups, the racial equity support line, and the ability to conduct key environmental studies. The County also erases its land acknowledgement. This vital programming delivered on the mission and vision of a County that is connected, compassionate, and learning. ...
OPINION: Housing solutions start with community engagement
As a longtime Lake Oswego resident and a real estate developer, I share Mayor Buck and Councilor Mboup’s goal of creating the right conditions to facilitate realistic housing possibilities. Over the years, I have learned from the school of hard knocks — what succeeds and what fails. Now that my children are young adults and have families of their own, I see the challenges they face in becoming homeowners, especially in Lake Oswego. Metro’s Urban Growth Boundary, interest rates and rising construction costs all impact...
Why Clackamas County's most pro-tolling elected official still opposes ODOT's proposal
The “outstanding irony” isn’t lost on Happy Valley Councilor Brett Sherman as he frequently drives to Metro’s regional headquarters for transportation-related advisory meetings. “We all get into our single-occupancy vehicles so we can talk about how to get people out of their cars,” he said. Sherman theoretically has TriMet access, but his nearest bus stop is more than a mile from his house in Happy Valley. After transferring to light...
Winter Storm: Lake Oswego schools recover from damage and four snow days
A week of uncertainty — changing forecasts, sleet, snow, freezing rain, ice and wind — shut down Lake Oswego schools for four days. Classes resumed on Monday, Jan. 22. Lake Oswego School District administrators closely monitored the weather throughout the week to make assessments about the feasibility of classes returning the following morning. Unfortunately, the expected thaw of ice that could allow a return to school never came. While main...
Storm prompts preparedness, policy questions in Lake Oswego
In the aftermath of a devastating winter storm, some community members think Lake Oswego fell short in its preparation and response. Westridge neighborhood resident Britney Lehmann Colton distributed a Change.org petition directed at the city of Lake Oswego elected officials asking them to update their tree code, have warming shelters ready and enlist trained, local community members to assist with disaster response. The petition had 321 signatures as of Monday. ...
Photos: A visual recap of Lake Oswego's winter storm
The photos are harrowing — and won’t soon be forgotten. A winter storm that began Saturday, Jan. 13 and continued throughout last week proved to be devastating in Lake Oswego, bringing down more than 100 trees while leaving thousands without power and roads mostly impassible. These are some of the images captured by our photographers and local residents.
Oregon House Democrats plan to choose their next speaker today in unusual vote
Democrats in the Oregon House are planning to make a highly unusual decision the evening of Monday, Jan. 22: Who should be the state’s next powerful House speaker once the February legislative session is wrapped up? In a move that bucks the normal timeline for leadership elections, Democrats are hoping to solidify their choice for speaker ahead of the session that convenes Monday, Feb. 5. That’s despite the fact that whoever actually becomes their nominee wouldn’t take on the role until March or later. Current Speaker Dan Rayfield, D-Corvallis, has said he’ll preside over the 35-day session. Rayfield, a 44-year-old Corvallis lawmaker, is running for the open seat of Oregon attorney general. Naugle: It's still the most wonderful time of the year
Last winter, I vividly remember hustling in and out of the 26th annual Les Schwab Invitational, attempting to beat the chilly December air with a brisk walk into the gym or back out to my car. Whether I was on the way in or out, I was always moving quickly, braving the sub-40 degree temperatures with a very particular efficiency. Hands in pockets. Hood up. Chin tucked. One foot in...
Oregon men's basketball drops heartbreaker to Utah, 80-77
For the first time in 5,547 days, the Oregon Ducks men’s basketball team lost a game in Salt Lake City, Utah, Sunday, Jan. 21. Headed into the half, Oregon led by one point, up 33-32. The Ducks came back out of the intermission playing even more productive offense, scoring 44 in the final 20 minutes. Offense was not the problem for Oregon. ...
