OLYMPIA—Mayor Brett Gailey of Lake Stevens has been elected to the Association of Washington Cities (AWC) board of directors. The election was conducted by city leaders from across the state at the AWC Annual Conference in Vancouver, Washington, held from June 18-21, 2024. Survey says: Arlington has 5th-priciest apartment rents in nation
Arlington posted the fifth costliest median apartment-rental rate among the nation’s 100 largest urban areas in June, as rates at the local level continued to move higher. The county’s median rental rate for June of $2,586 was up 1.5 percent month-over-month and up 4.2 percent year-over-year. That’s according to Apartment List, which tracks rental costs in the largest urban areas and reported data June 27.
Raise the Wage Responsibly: Everett minimum wage initiative alternative
In June, a group called Everett Deserves a Raise announced they were collecting signatures to get a ballot initiative to raise the Everett minimum wage starting July 1, 2025. The initiative would raise the minimum wage to $20.24 an hour and require offering qualified part-time employees additional available hours before hiring new employees. The proposed initiative is similar to the Renton and Tukwila initiatives, which were passed by voters.

It’s a grab bag as we head into the Fourth of July holiday, starting with some good news for the ferry service. We were worried passengers on the Mukilteo-Clinton run would have to suffer through longer-than-normal wait times over the holiday because of the damage to the Suquamish. It had been in dry dock the last few weeks after being damaged by a crab pot line, but it is back in service. That keeps a 144-car Olympic Class ferry on that route.
