Polk State College will hold back-to-school giveaway Aug. 17 in Lake Wales

Polk State College will hold its Ready to Soar event on Aug. 17 in Lake Wales, with plans to give away up to 500 backpacks and 1,500 books.

The event is open to the public and intended for students in kindergarten through college, Polk State said in a news release. While supplies last, each student will receive a backpack with school supplies. Students can select a book to take home, thanks to a donation by the Family Literacy Academy at Lake Wales.

The Polk State College Foundation, in partnership with the Lake Wales Police Department, will also provide hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks, while supplies last.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 17 at the Polk State JD Alexander Center, 152 E. Central Ave., in Lake Wales.
