Lakeville sophomore Faye Braun finished 30th in girls pursuit at the state high school Nordic skiing meet last week in Biwabik.

Braun, who skis for a combined Lakeville North/South team, had an overall time of 29 minutes, 59.1 seconds in the Feb. 14 pursuit race at Giants Ridge Recreation Area. She had the 33rd-fastest time in the 5-kilometer freestyle race, the first of two stages in the race, and was 29th on the classic leg.

Other state pursuit qualifiers from the Sun Thisweek/Dakota County Tribune coverage area included Burnsville/Shakopee senior Kaelyn Ambuehl, 40th in the girls race in 30:31.1; Ellyn Engels, 51st in the girls race in 31:03.2; Eagan senior Luke Poppinga, 43rd in the boys race in 26:41.9; and Lakeville ninth-grader John Engels, 81st in the boys race in 28:50.9.

Also competing in pursuit were five members of the state-qualifying Eastview/Rosemount girls team, which finished 16th at state. The pursuit skiers contributed 77 points, with the remaining 126 scored by the team sprint duo of Evi Swenson and Noelle Wanken, which finished 17th.

One hundred twelve skiers competed in the girls race, with another 112 starting for the boys. Pursuit competitors included individual qualifiers along with skiers who advanced because they were on state-qualifying teams.

The Eastview/Rosemount contingent was led by Emily Percival, who was 79th in 32:35.4. Also skiing for Eastview/Rosemount, which competes under the ISD 196 Nordic skiing umbrella, were Morgan Brown (87th in 33:31.2), Liza Kerndt (95th in 34:29.4), Kayla Case (98th in 34:36.4) and Emily Hopke (34:37.9). All five Eastview/Rosemount pursuit skiers are seniors.

Duluth East finished 12 points ahead of Minneapolis Washburn to win the girls team championship. Mounds View ninth-grader Linnea Ousdigian won the girls pursuit by nearly five seconds, finishing in 27:43.8.

On the boys side, Wayzata took the team championship, finishing six points ahead of Duluth East. Another ninth-grader, Logan Drevlow of Hopkins, won the pursuit in 23:36.2, more than 27 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor.

Team sprints were the focus of the second day of the state meet Feb. 15. In both the boys and girls divisions, 24 teams were split up into three heats. The winner of each heat advanced to the sprint finals, along with the next five fastest times. A team’s two skiers alternated classic legs on a 1.2K course, with each skiing the loop twice.

Eastview/Rosemount’s Swenson and Wanken were sixth in their heat and 17th overall in 16:20.81, and did not advance to the finals. Duluth East won the team sprint final in 13:43.60.

Teams from Burnsville/Shakopee and ISD 196 competed in the same heat in the boys sprint preliminaries. Lliam Merrel and Quinn Hess, both Burnsville students, were third in their heat and 10th overall in 13:29.49, less than 12 seconds from qualifying for the finals. The ISD 196 team of Tyler Mullin and Walter Haakenson was sixth in their heat and 17th overall in 13:59.48.

Brainerd won the boys team sprint final in 11:55.94.
