MARSHALL COUNTY, Miss. — A coroner has confirmed that sweltering heat is to blame for the death of a man in the Lamar community over the weekend.

“He stayed outside too long and really, you need to limit yourself when you’re outside in the heat,” Marshall County Coroner James Anderson said.

Anderson isn’t releasing the name yet of the 32-year-old man who died from heat exposure last Saturday but confirms that he was found outdoors on Dowdy Road by a relative.

“They said he was found in the yard dead,” a neighbor told WREG. “He had already passed away when they (first responders) got there.”

“I was told the last time someone had talked to him, it was around 1:30,” Anderson said.

Though the man’s family members were not ready to speak publicly about their loss, those who knew him said it wasn’t uncommon to see him walking, usually to a store more than two and a half miles from his home.

“I was on my way to the store and he was coming from the store with two bags in his hands,” a neighbor said. “He was always stopping by here wanting Cokes and stuff like that and he would go head back on home.”

Anderson said that the man’s passing is the first heat-related death this year in Marshall County. He urged residents to take care of themselves and others to prevent more from happening.

“Check on your older people,” Anderson said. “If they are outside or on the inside (and) they don’t have air- make sure. Just check on people.”
