Picnic and pig roast set Saturday, July 20
The Phelps Fire Department’s 68th annual picnic and pig roast is scheduled for Saturday, July 20, from 3 to 9 p.m. at Wavering Park. The picnic includes roasted pork sandwiches, hot dogs for the kids, refreshments, kids’ games, 50/50s, raffles, firefighter demos, fireworks and a medical emergency helicopter landing. Wayne Mitchell Bondioli
Wayne Mitchell Bondioli, age 68, passed away on Monday, July 1, 2024, at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff. Wayne was born September 7, 1955, in Merrill, son of the late Clement and Beatrice (Peck) Bondioli. Wayne was the youngest of four children. Wayne graduated from Merrill High School with the class of 1974. After high school, he entered the workforce at Northern Door. From there, Wayne went to Weinbrenner Shoe Company. It was there that he met Judy Berndt. Wayne and Judy were married on October 4, 1980. Together, they were blessed with two sons, Jason and Jared.
TNC and Forest Service plant trees along Ontonagon River Watershed
According to a July 5 release from The Nature Conservancy in Michigan, the conservancy, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, with the help of contractors, planted some 51,000 native conifer tree seedlings across approximately 170 acres in the East Branch Ontonagon River Watershed and the Perch River Watershed of the Ottawa National Forest near Kenton in May.
