Sioux City marks 35th anniversary of Flight 232 crash
Today is the 35th anniversary of the crash of United Airlines flight 232 at the Sioux Gateway Airport. The Mid American Museum of Aviation and Transportation is holding an open house to remember the 112 who died in the crash, the 180 who survived, and the first responders and community members who aided them.
Big animals need a big property, and ARL of Iowa just purchased a 21-acre ranch
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is expanding its capacity to care for barnyard animals with the purchase of a 21-acre ranch in north central Polk County. The new facilities include three grazing pastures, a barn with horse stalls, both an indoor and outdoor arena and a smaller structure for goats, chickens and other small barn animals. The purchase cost $2 million, with half the funds coming from the ARL Foundation. A donation campaign will also help raise funds to refurbish the facilities before animals move in.

Wachholtz and Ballard honored by Governor for volunteerism
Paula Wachholtz of Panora and Cathy Ballard of Guthrie Center were honored June 25 during the annual Iowa 2024 Governor’s Volunteer Awards ceremony. DNR Studying Ways to Increase Deer Population in Southwest Iowa

Tree companies swamped following derecho in Des Moines area
URBANDALE, Iowa — In the Karen Acres neighborhood tree trucks and utility trucks rumble down the streets. Piles of branches line the streets, waiting to be picked up. “Non-stop text and phone calls nonstop all day and night,” said Tim Roney, of RR Tree Service. Roney recently retired from a job in an auto repair shop. Now he, and son Adam, are hard at work getting branches off of rooftops.
