Wheat Scoop: Stop the streak!
Control volunteer wheat early and often to protect next year’s yields. Billowing clouds bringing summer showers are a welcome sight for sore eyes following a multi-year drought, but Kansas producers should also keep their eyes on their fields to monitor and control volunteer wheat. Doing so is essential to protecting next summer’s harvest as those sneaky plants harbor the wheat curl mites that carry yield-limiting diseases like Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV).
FIRST WARN FORECAST: Few isolated storms this weekend, extreme heat returns soon
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The extreme heat will soon be the main weather story in Kansas and Missouri next week, but for the weekend, temperatures won’t be too bad. We do have to watch for a few more pop-up showers and thunderstorms out there. As we get closer to sunset Saturday evening, the showers/rumbles should die off. Sunday, a few pop-ups in the afternoon and evening will be possible again. Highs on Sunday will be near 90, with high humidity. This won’t be too bad compared to what is in store this next week. An Excessive Heat Watch goes into effect on Monday afternoon and will last through Thursday evening for some of our Kansas counties. More of the KCTV viewing area will likely be added into some sort of heat alert as we get closer. The extreme heat will bring highs in the mid to upper 90s to the area, with heat index values as hot as 110+ degrees at times. A front will reset our temperatures at least a little bit for next weekend with the lower 90s. Still, expect tough heat day after day. A good reminder that it is the heart of summer. Starting Monday, please avoid strenuous outdoor activities in the heart of the afternoon and early evening, this is the time frame with the higher heat illness risk.
