LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The next chapter for a closed section of the Meridian Mall has gone to members of the public for their input. Meridian Township officials held the first open house meeting on the project on Tuesday.

Officials say the proposal would covert the long-vacant former Yonkers storefront into a community center. The facility would also have a senior center.

$5 million from the state of Michigan has already been set aside for the project, but before a price can be determined, township leaders would like to see a final draft based on what the community wants.

“The first thing we need to know is that the community is supportive of this project,” said Marna Wilson, a trustee of the Meridian Township Board. “There have been efforts to do it from the 90s and early 2000s, but this is the plan that has gotten further and forward.”

There’s still time to give your thoughts on this project.

The next open house will be held on Wed. July 24, at the Central Park Pavilion from 5:30–7:30 p.m.
