If you are in the Lowcountry area of South Carolina looking for a great restaurant with a rich history, look no further than Poogan’s Porch. Perfect for brunch or dinner, this restaurant has been recognized as one of the best by the Travel Channel, Martha Stewart Living, and many others at 72 Queen Street. But the added perk of dining here is the two spirits that are said to haunt the premises.

The two-story establishment was a residence when erected in 1891. In 1976, new owners renovated it, turning it into a restaurant. Before this, Zoe St. Amand and her sister Elizabeth lived together for decades here. Elizabeth passed away in 1945, and Zoe, in complete disarray, was forced to live alone for the first time in her life. Zoe lost all control, and an ambulance escorted her to the nearby hospital for a mental health evaluation. She passed away in 1954, nine years after her sister.

After the renovations, the apparition of a woman began to present herself to customers and staff. Much like the Brentwood Restaurant in Myrtle Beach, the new owners learned that the apparitions are not fans of items moving about. But, despite Elizabeth dying inside her house, people believe the ghost is her sister coming back to check on the place.

Allegedly, one woman spotted Zoe in the bathroom mirror on the top floor. She looked behind her to see that nobody was there, only to turn to the mirror and see Zoe again, causing her to run out into the street, screaming. Zoe is commonly known for staring at people from around corners, but she also tries to push people down when she can get away with it.

The restaurant name was inspired by a local stray dog who became an icon. Poogan loved attention, often sitting on the porch while looking out at Queen Street. The customers were big fans of Poogan, giving him a ton of affection. Unfortunately, Poogan passed away in 1979, just three years after the restaurant opened.

Today, customers claim they can see his apparition inside. Next time you venture inside for some shrimp and grits, please make sure to leave Poogan some.
