Across Iowa this weekend we see a number of events that mash-up genres and activities. Some of these might seem strange on paper, but that’s what you thought when you tried that food pairing you swear by now. (Supposedly, for the adventurous out there, pickles and peanut butter is a treat.) The Power Glove-toting Heatbox brings his blend of comedy and beatboxing loops to The Olympic in Cedar Rapids. Experimental folk artist Jenny Parrott visits The Black Angel on Saturday, flexing their Omnichord and singer/songwriter skills. Iowa's 1st participant in world's toughest horse race bids farewell ahead of Mongolia trip
A big send-off party was held in Central City on Thursday night for Cedar Rapids firefighter Shelby Van Weelden, who is one of about 40 international riders and the first Iowan ever chosen to participate in what some say is the longest and toughest horse race in the world: the Mongol Derby.

Pipestone County Star sports editor Eric Viccaro was present for the Southwest Minnesota Shootout one-day basketball extravaganza at Luverne High School on Thursday, July 11. Pipestone Area Schools’, Edgerton’s and Southwest Minnesota Christian’s girls teams were in action. The Eagle boys also were there taking on Ridge View from Iowa. This is a yearly event in Luverne.
SD Highway Crash Claims One Life
A Sunday evening ATV crash claimed the life of one and severely injured another near Garretson, SD. Preliminary crash information indicates a 2022 Polaris ATV was traveling north on 487th Avenue, a gravel road, lost control, and entered the ditch. The vehicle rolled, ejecting both occupants. The driver, a 16-year-old female from Garretson, SD, received fatal injuries. A passenger, Mark T. Pierret, was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Neither was using their seatbelt.The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
Update on fatal UTV crash in Minnehaha County
GARRETSON, S.D. (KELO) — The South Dakota Department of Public Safety (DPS) has provided an update into a fatal crash that occurred near Garretson on July 21. According to the DPS, the vehicle in question was a Polaris RZR side-by-side, which rolled after the 16-year-old driver lost control on a gravel road east of Garretson.

With the many projects scheduled for the IKM-Manning School District this summer, the new superintendent, Dr. Angela Huseman, has been busy ensuring everything is ready for the 2024-25 school year. Huseman was selected earlier this year as a shared superintendent between the IKM-Manning and Tri-Center School Districts, replacing former Superintendent Trevor Miller, who will now oversee the Exira-EHK and Audubon Community School District. Huesman, a Carroll native who graduated from Carroll High School in 1985, wasn’t thinking of pursuing a degree in education, but looking back, she realized it was her calling.
