The White Sox are getting Better
But the bar was very low. The White Sox continued to be busy this offseason, making a couple of trades over the weekend. They shipped right-handed relief pitcher, Gregory Santos, to the Mariners in exchange for right-handed pitcher Prelander Berroa and outfielder Zach DeLoach. They also picked up outfielder, Dominic Fletcher from the Diamondbacks in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect, Cristian Mena.
Satire: Examples of Spin in Everyday Life
They often hide an ugly truth. One of the casualties we’ve seen in today’s society is truth. For example, we’ve heard the expression, “alternative facts.” Actually, alternative facts are generally lies. When people testify in court or other venues, the question is asked, “Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?” Often times people will consider that as three options.
Opinion: The Top 15 TV Theme Songs
There are no new entries. I don’t watch a lot of network TV programming nowadays. That also means I don’t pay much attention to TV shows’ theme songs. That was not the case in years gone by. Sometimes my favorite programs were introduced by a really butt kicking theme song. Others, didn’t necessarily kick butt, but were memorable.
Remembering the TV Show, "In Search of...
Lots of those episodes could have been the basis for an Indiana Jones movie. For years most of my writing was for cartoonists. I did work for some syndicated cartoon strips and websites. A lot of my cartoons were for financial and technical sites. I recently wrote about the responses I get from my work. I found one of the toughest readerships I’ve dealt with was for a site called, How to Geek.
Eating Low on the Hog
When eating of the pig, it's location, location, location. I’m not a great one for fancy foods. I’m pretty much a meat and potatoes guy, but the meat I’ve eaten over the years isn’t exactly prime cut. To be specific, I’ve eaten a lot of tripe meats. Some are definitely better than others.
Ten Cool Things About Naps
They are like Red Bull for Old People. As I’ve gotten older my routine has changed a bit. Naps have become a staple of my afternoons. Not always by choice, but a part of my afternoons nevertheless. Generally speaking, they are not unwelcome. Unless I’m driving. Just kidding. I was checking to see if you were nodding off. So, here are some cool things about naps.
Opinion: Caleb Williams Should Keep His Draft Wishes to Himself
His going to the Bears still might not be a done deal. After the Bears secured the overall number one pick in the upcoming NFL draft, the raging controversy in Chicago, and in a lot of NFL circles is whether the Bears would draft Caleb Williams or trade the pick and go with Justin Fields. Lately it seems that the pendulum of public opinion has swung towards the Bears drafting Williams and trading Fields.
Coping with the Physical Changes of Old Age
You have to figure out ways to compensate for getting older. As I sit here writing this piece, I feel fairly good. I can sit here and type about as well as I did 30 or 40 years ago. It’s when I have to do something physically that I feel my age. That and when I get up. And when I try to stay awake in the afternoon. And when I try to stay awake for a movie. Let’s consider some adjustments that need to be made.
Facts About the TV Show, "Wanted Dead or Alive"
Forget Dog, when it comes to bounty hunters, I'll take Josh Randall. Before Steve McQueen became a mega movie star, he played Josh Randall on the TV series, Wanted Dead or Alive. His charisma was evident even back then. Josh Randall was a principled bounty hunter, which many people considered an oxymoron.
Opinion: Top 10 Western Character Actors
You might not know their names but you've probably seen their faces. As I’ve said before, I like westerns. Mostly old westerns. If you watch a lot of old westerns like I do, you see a lot of the same guys crop up over and over again. And after a while, you have you favorites. Whenever a list like this is put together, it’s subjective. So, when I say top ten character actors, I mean the ones I like the best. Your list would no doubt vary.
Will Jed Hoyer Sign One of the Boras Four?
And if he does, what happens to the rest of the market?. Jed Hoyer was taking a lot of heat early in this offseason for not making any moves. That criticism has slowed a bit after the Cubs have shored up their bullpen and added free agent starter Shota Imanaga and first baseman Michael Busch, but Cubs fans are still waiting for Jed to pull the trigger on a big free agent signing.
Satire: Problems with Being Dr. Frankenstein's Creature
It wasn't just villiagers with torches and pitchforks. There have been scores of Frankenstein movies. Generally speaking, things don’t end up going well for the creature. It’s not surprising. He had so many things going against him. Really, Dr. Frankenstein set his creature up for failure. It’s just another case of a doctor playing God and his patient suffering for it. Consider the obstacles the creature face.
When You are Poor, Little Things Mean a Lot
It can lead to a greater appreciation of life in general. There is an art to being poor. My wife and I have been poor for most of our married life before becoming slightly less poor in the last few years. The difference between being poor and slightly less poor is noticeable in subtle ways. But in ways that make life a little bit better.
Ten Desperately Needed Rules for Corporate Etiquette
Not only are many corporates exceedingly greedy, but they’re also rude. Over the years we’ve seen a shift in wealth. Wealth doesn’t seem to be trickling down, it seems to be getting sucked from the ground up. While corporations and those at the top seem to be prospering, things at ground level aren’t so rosy. Not only are corporations getting wealthier, in many cases, but they’re also becoming ruder.
Facts About "Quantum Leap"
Sam was a pretty cool guy. There seems to be a revival of old TV shows from the 80s. Magnum PI is an example of that trend. I really liked the Tom Selleck version. I’ve never watched the new version. There seemed to be no connection between the old and new version.
Jed Hoyer's Patience in Free Agency May Pay Off
Cubs heads baseball honcho, Jed Hoyer has taken some heat this offseason for lack of activity, but his patience may pay off. Thus far in this offseason, Hoyer has added free agent starting pitcher, Shoto Imanaga, relievers Yency Almonte and left-handed hitting corner infielder, Michael Busch.
The Enduring Mystery of "Three Blind Mice"
How some nursery rhymes make it into our culture is beyond me. The one I’ll address today is Three Blind Mice. On a future date, I might delve into Three Men in a Tub. Of course, I’m a little afraid to google that one. It sounds like something that might show up in some police vice squad records. So, one to Three Blind Mice.
Facts About the Movie, "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"
What it may have lacked in historical accuracy, it made up for in entertainment value. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a great example of a movie that critics didn’t care for, but moviegoers loved. For example, Roger Ebert wasn’t a particular fan of the movie. It seems that Ebert felt the production values were overblown and detracted from the film, plus the dialogue between Butch and Sundance was too contemporary. The idea of a movie just trying to be entertaining appears to have eluded Roger’s grasp.
