    Man sentenced to 15 years in fatal DWI crash that killed 2 in Las Cruces

    EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) — A 33-year-old Las Cruces man pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle and has been sentenced to serve 15 years in prison in the death of two people back in 2022, according to the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office in Las Cruces.

    Nicholas Esteban Gurrola pleaded guilty of two counts of homicide by vehicle, one count of great bodily harm, leaving the scene of an accident and other charges related to a head-on collision that killed Enedina Jo Lara and Remy Sigala and left another person seriously injured.

    According to the District Attorney’s Office, Gurrola was sentenced to 19 years in prison, with four years suspended, for a total of a 15-year sentence.

    2 women killed in head-on crash in Las Cruces

    Las Cruces Police officers were called to a crash at 8:36 p.m. on Thursday, December 22, 2022, on the corner of Spruce Avenue and Virginia Street, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

    According to the District Attorney’s Office, Gurrola was driving at a speed of over 75 mph when he veered into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into another vehicle traveling westbound on Spruce Avenue.

    Gurrola was seen stumbling out of his vehicle and running away from the crash. Witnesses ran and detained Gurrola until police arrived, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

    The driver of the other vehicle, Enedina Jo Lara, and passenger Remy Sigala died at the scene, and a third passenger was flown to El Paso Medical Center with severe injuries, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

    According to the District Attorney’s Office, a 2-year-old child in their car seat did not suffer injuries from the crash.

    Gurrola failed a field sobriety test, and his vehicle had no proof of insurance, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
