Las Vegas businessman gets 21 months in prison for hospital billing scheme

LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) — A two-year scheme to bill a hospital for products he never provided resulted in a 21-month prison sentence for a Las Vegas business owner.

Roland Sagun Torres pleaded guilty on Nov. 3, 2023, to a mail fraud charge after an FBI investigation into false invoices that added up to more than $700,000. Torres was sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Gloria M. Navarro. He will also be required to serve three years of supervised release and pay $712,000 in restitution.

A news release from the U.S. Attorney’s office announcing the sentence did not specify which hospital was the victim.

According to court documents, Torres devised a scheme beginning in 2020 and continuing through June 14, 2022, to defraud a Nevada hospital. Torres used the names of at least 100 patients and doctors at the hospital to submit false invoices for products he never provided.

Jason M. Frierson, U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada, and Spencer L. Evans, Special Agent in Charge for the FBI, made the announcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward Veronda prosecuted the case.
