LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) – Locals and tourists gathered on the Las Vegas Strip on Tuesday night to watch the iconic Mirage Volcano erupt for the last time before the resort closes.

“It’s unbelievably different from anything you could possibly see anywhere on earth unless you are from Hawaii,” Las Vegas local John Davidson said.

Davidson, who has been coming to the Mirage for years, made sure to get his last photos in before the resort closes Wednesday.

“It’s kind of sad, we came to a show last week and it was one of the last ones. We will miss many things about The Mirage, but I know something good is coming,” he said.

Why is The Mirage closing its doors?

Tourists like Charmaine Venson-Gettys said even though she lives nearly 3,000 miles away, she always made a point to come and see the lush landscape and the volcano show whenever she’s in town. Now, she wishes it would stay.

“I really love the scenery and everything and I’m not against new, but I think they should build the Hard Rock guitar somewhere else and not take away this beautiful landscape because there’s nothing else like it on the strip,” Venson-Gettys added.

The Mirage opened in 1989 and was considered to be the first true Las Vegas mega-resort, coming to be known as one of the more upscale venues on the Strip. Throughout the years, it’s become more of a family-friendly establishment, attracting the masses.

Irene Piedra brought her family the Mirage on Tuesday, hoping to share the sights with her family.

“We will probably catch the show tonight for sure,” Piedra said. “Structurally, there is so much to see and I’m glad we are seeing it before it’s gone for good.”
