Card shower announced for Eugene Baker’s 103rd birthday
LAURA — The family of Eugene (Gene) E. Baker, who turns 103 on Aug. 8, invites everyone to participate in a card shower to celebrate his birthday. Baker was born on Aug. 8, 1921. He is the son of the late David and Kate Jane (Cordier) Baker. He lived his most of his life in the Laura area. He also spent time serving his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII.
Union Sportsmen's Alliance invites Ohio youths to free fishing event
The Union Sportsmen's Alliance (USA) will host Take Kids Fishing Day July 27 in Dayton to educate and inspire the next generation of anglers. The event, which is open to the public, will provide an opportunity for children from various communities and backgrounds to learn about the importance of fishing and conservation. Our community is blessed with many assets; one of those blessings is the Sunday night Greenville Municipal Band concerts in Greenville City Park. Those concerts are not new, not an innovation, but a time-honored tradition that began in the late 1800’s with the “Silver Cornet Band” which performed in the 1870’s and continued with the appearance of an ensemble led by Professor Michael Miller of Dayton, “one of the most thoroughly educated and practical musician in the State” on July 4, 1883 and again on August 22 of that same year. Contemporary reports indicate that those concerts were “well-appreciated,” a reaction that continues for concert-goers to this day.
